2008 Water Forum Bonus Events

Participants to the Water Forum will have the opportunity to participate in one of two field trips.  The field trips will be held at the end of the day on April 30 and conclude with an hour of “Percolation” at the Westcliffe lanes in downtown Westcliffe.

Local Mining and History Field Trip

Local historian and Town of Silver Cliff Trustee , Dorothy Urban, will lead a tour of the local historic sites of interest in the area.  Factual as well as fun this tour will provide information on the colorful past that has shaped the Westcliffe and Silver Cliff towns of today.

The tour will end with a private viewing of the historic " Silver Cliff Museum ".  The building was built in 1879 as the original Silver Cliff Fire House and Town Hall.  A rare 1879 fire hook and ladder wagon in nearly pristine condition is on display.

The artifacts and memorabilia housed in this one-time Fire House and Town Hall came from residents, former resident and friends of the Wet Mountain Valley in Custer County , Colorado . ”You may well find items that bring back fond memories to the older person and the younger will say "What was that used for?"

Ranchland Preservation Tour

Executive Director of the San Isabel Land Protection Trust will lead a drive of approximately 10,000 acres on ten protected working ranches in the Westcliffe area.

The San Isabel Land Protection Trust’s service area encompasses 1.7 million acres including the Wet Mountain Valley and surrounding San Isabel Region of south central Colorado . Approximately two thirds of our region remains unprotected from a variety of threats including aging ownership, agricultural abandonment, population growth and competing water and resource interests. Since 1995, we have worked with private landowners protecting over 26,000 acres of productive working land, scenic open space and important wildlife habitat.
